Movie Summary
Blue Valentine is a movie that interweaves memories between the past when they just got to know and loved each other and the present time when they feel desperate with the marriage that is ruined.
Dean (Ryan Gosling), with no family or close relative, is a guy full of dreams and has more romantic ambitions. Dean always wants to find a woman to love forever. He works for a moving company in Brooklyn. Cindy (Michelle Williams) is a medical student with an ambition to become a doctor. She is living with her parents who often have an altercation and take care of her grandmother in Pennsylvania. She has a boyfriend named Bobby, one day they have intercourse but he does not use protection. Therefore, Cindy decided to break up with Bobby.
Sometime later, Cindy and Dean meet by chance in the nursing home and Dean loves Cindy at first sight, they encounter again on a bus and start dating afterward.
After a while, Cindy discovers she is pregnant but she does not know who the father was. She decides to have an abortion but cancels it at the last moment. Dean proposes Cindy and adopts to become the father of the unknown child after Cindy was not brave to have an abortion.
Five years later, the mistress lives in an old house in Pennsylvania with their daughter, Frankie. Cindy became a nurse at a clinic and Dean, her husband, is a house painter and always struggling with alcohol. One day, due to Cindy’s carelessness, they missed the dog that Dean and his daughter love so much and found it dead by the side of the road. The death of the dog strains their relationship. To regain the romance in love, ignoring Cindy’s reluctance, Dean insists on keeping overnight in a romantic motel to revive their relationship. When they come to the motel, Cindy has an awkward with her old boyfriend – Bobby. She and Dean later have a controversy when she mentioned about Bobby.
At the motel, Dean tries to salvage the relationship but Cindy rebuffs him. They continue to get into argument, even though making love, they still feel tired from two sides and start fighting.
The next morning, Cindy leaves for a call of job. Dean eventually comes looking for her at work and they continue to argue again. Dean fights with Dr. Feinberg, who then fires Cindy. Cindy asks Dean for a divorce. When Dean goes home, Dean tried to hold on to Cindy, hoping that she would think of her daughter. The opening of the film is a scene of a family of 3 including the couple Dean, Cindy, and their adorable daughter – Frankie. From the beginning of the film we have seen the contrast between a funny father, who loves to tease and a stiff mother who is not interested in her husband’s pranks. She always looks tired and not happy about life.
The film circuit of Blue Valentine interweaves between memories in the past and the present time. It is difficult to realize the film circuit when we watch the first footage, but then, as we realize that Dean and Cindy used to be a couple with passionate love, we are incredibly surprised and feel the bitterness and suffocation in their marriage lives.
Dean loves Cindy at first sight when they casually met at the nursing home. He is a handsome guy working for a moving company, he always dreams of finding the woman of his life. Cindy is a young medical student who has a lot of ambition. They met as a destiny, and loved each other with intense romantic love, they do not care about any things but love.
For Dean, he only needs work to get pay and always thinks that he does not deserve a lover. And Cindy, she has an unhappy family when her parents are always loud to fight. She does not want to become a person like his parents.
Dean’s love for Cindy was the greatest love that he accepts becoming the father of a child who is not yet to be his son. The moment when Cindy came out of the abortion room, we could see the hope in Dean’s eyes desiring to become a real family with Cindy.
Ironically, their marriage lives are too different from romantic love in the past. Dean became a father with a bald head and a pair of glasses, he also lost his previous romantic appearance. And Cindy, her previous bright face is now no longer, instead is a mother who always works hasty and looks tired of her husband.
The realities of earning the living, raising kids, and balancing the marriage lead them to seem run out of opinions. Cindy always wants Dean to have a better job and do something for their lives but all the things Dean wants is to be a family with her and their daughter, Frankie.
They were no longer the couple to say sweet words as in the past, they now easily have arguments in the same way as Cindy’s parents did. They become more sensitive. How can the two people who used to sing together, do the craziest thing, and laugh together with the bland jokes are now becoming indifferent to their marriage like that?
Watching the footage of their marriage life, the majority of the scenes are filmed in tight and oppressive spaces. It seems that the director wants to convey the suffocation and tiredness in the couple’s marriage. Their marriage probably could not be saved anymore.
The film brings a sense of being overly realistic, being too clear, and causing the viewer to be sour. It was a shortage to see that Cindy decided to divorce and Dean tried to remain in marriage but cannot make his spouse stay in the last scene of the movie.
My parents watched this film and comment that what Cindy and Dean experienced is an obvious thing in any marriage. They feel the film has performed beautifully on every couple’s marriage life. However, when I watched this film at the age of 23, I saw a bit of discomfort and regret their beautiful love. Why do not they try to change and give each other a chance?
Maybe the sense of the audience when watching Blue Valentine may change, especially when they watch the movie at different ages, for example at the age of 15, 20, 50, or 70. When you are young like me, you probably will not understand all the movie’s meaning. But when you had married and became older, you could understand the feeling of Dean and Cindy and may cry when watching it.
Ending the film, Dean leaves in the direction opposite his wife and daughter while the front ones are firing the fireworks on Independence Day. This is an open ending and makes viewers wonder many questions. Will that Dean comes back, will Cindy forgive him or will they be completely away from each other? Perhaps the director of the film wants to create an open ending so that every audience could find their answers and creates their endings.
Art is probably coming from the simplest and realistic things, therefore, Blue Valentine has made a strong impression on the audience from the first premiere and received high reviews from film critics. Blue Valentine is always on the list of the best love movies.
When watching this film, I do not feel that I am watching a movie, it just like I am watching a real couple with real stories. The film made me a little bit nervous about my future, I wonder if my marriage would be contrary to the salty love like them. Although the film has brought some merciful aspects of life, I still find it so cheery that even though they break up or not, at least they have loved each other with all their heart and have a great love affair.
About acting of Ryan Gosling and Michelle William, I have a strong impression with the two actors. Ryan is too handsome and he has communicated his feelings well through his eyes, the way he performed is also amazing. And for Michelle, she is also excellent at showing the standstill feeling on the stories of the couple in the movie. When Ryan and Michelle acting together, they look pretty much like a real couple and I love that.
Overall, Blue Valentine Movie is a film about love and marriage that has sad stories. The film brings the footage not only realistic moments but also very romantic and adorable. This is a movie that I will review when I am a bit more mature.
